J Dilla – Jay Dee’s Ma Dukes Collection

How does a new Dilla beat tape to close out the year sound? The late producer’s estate just dropped Jay Dee’s Ma Dukes Collection, a collection of previously unreleased (as far as I know) instrumentals from the extensive archives of the Detroit legend.

Menace, Producer of 2016 Smash “Panda” Drops His New Mixtape ‘The Beat Tape Vol. 1’

Menace, best known as the producer of “Panda,” releases his first beat tape.
British producer Menace is best known for as the producer of Desiigner’s massively successful #1 single “Panda.” Although he is grateful for the exposure he has gained from that record, he would also like to showcase the other sides of his production. This morning he released the first installment of a series of beat tapes series that he plans to update “every few months.”

“On [The Beat Tape Vol. 1], I have dancehall beats, RnB beats, and rap beats to show my diversity, and I even put a soundtrack-type beat, inspired by ‘The Last Samurai,’ at the end of the project,” Menace writes in a press release. “I would love to soundtrack a film one day.”

Mike WiLL Made-It – Instrumental Tuesdays 2016 (Mixtape)

Last year, Mike WiLL Made It introduced us to a new weekly series he dubbed, Instrumental Tuesdays showcasing beats he produced throughout 2015. This time, instead of dropping 3 new instrumentals a week, the producer took his time and held off to compile all his 2016 beats into one project called Instrumental Tuesdays 2016.

The 40-piece mixtape comes packed full of instrumentals used by the likes of Gucci Mane, Rae Sremmurd, Young Thug, Rihanna, Tinashe, Future, Beyonce, Juicy J and many more.

Unearthed J Dilla mixtape gives intimate look into producer’s tastes

It’s been 10 years since the death of legendary producer J Dilla and to celebrate his life BBE are re-releasing his posthumous album The Shining on 7″ vinyl.

But something else quite special has also emerged.

Thanks to Boiler Room we now have access to the music J Dilla was listening to in the build up to Welcome 2 Detroit’s release, Dilla’s debut, which was given to co-founder of BBE Records Peter Adarkwah on his first trip to Detroit with Dilla.

Here’s the story of the tape as told by Adarkwah:

“Towards the end of 1999 or early 2000, it was my first trip to Detroit. James (Yancey aka Dilla) was working with James Poyser on Erykah’s Mama’s Gun LP. We’d checked out a couple of record stores (I can’t recall where or their names) and this tape was playing in the car.

“I recall Think Twice was on the tape and I suggested there and then that he do a cover with Erykah for the BBE album. We didn’t get the Erykah feature, but people sure remember James’ cover.

“We drove past a sign, it said Welcome To Detroit and I suggested that would be a good name for the album. When we pulled over James gave me the tape and said this is yours, or words to that effect.”

There’s bound to be something on the tape to inspire aspiring hip hop producers, with deep cuts from heavyweights like Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson featured on the 46-minute tape giving an intimate look into what Dilla was listening to when driving his car or relaxing at home.
